West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is one of our favorites places to visit. The setting is spectacular. This is
not a place to visit if you are in a hurry because there is so much to experience. On the day we visited,
the weather could not have been better. We sat on a park bench on the lighthouse grounds and
watched birds fly in and out of the tall pine trees just behind us. We also enjoyed our own little whale
watching adventure without leaving land. We had read that this was a great place to watch birds and for
whale watching, and we found that to be true. Even though we are not into watching birds or even whale
watching, we really enjoyed it. Behind us in a tall pine tree was a young male eagle. I later learned it was
a young eagle because its head was dark and not white, a sign of its youth. There were so many
different birds flying in and out of the trees, birds we didn’t recognize. And after hiking up the coast a
bit, we lounged on the rocks and enjoyed whale watching for at least an hour. The travel guides did not
overstate how good the whale watching is at this location.
